Western Novels

First Western Novel

I began writing Western novels for Robert Hale in 1996.They are short, so they
don't take very long to produce: writing 1,500 words (three or four hours) a day,
I can finish a Western in three weeks - though I don't do that very often!

My short Western novels are written under four different pseudonyms:
Jack Sheriff; Jim Lawless; Will Keen; Matt Laidlaw. So far I have written
thirty-four. Thirty have already been published, and four more will be published
in 2009 and 2010.

Many authors write short stories as a break between their longer novels. I find
that Western novels serve the same purpose, but with the advantage of earning
Public Lending Right money when they are published and placed in libraries
nationwide. Brazos Guns, published in 1996, is still bringing in PLR after 13 years!

The random examples of covers you see here include Robert Hale hardbacks
(Black Horse Westerns), and large print editions by Thorpe (Ulverscroft)
and Dales (Magna).
